Former speakers of Cross River, Abia assemblies dump PDP

Former Cross River State House of Assembly Speaker in the 8th Assembly, John Gaul Lebo, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. This was disclosed in a resignation letter signed by him on May 10, 2024, and addressed to the Ward Chairman of PDP, Adadama Council Ward, Adadama, Abi Local Council of the state.

Lebo didn’t give any reason for his resignation. However, he appreciated the PDP for giving him a platform, which advanced his political career.

“I wish to communicate my resignation as a member of the PDP at all levels. “I appreciate the opportunity and platform offered to me by the party in the last few years. I wish you the best,” the letter read.

SIMILARLY, the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, has explained why he defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement, Orji attributed his defection to certain events in the build-up to the 2023 general elections, as well as its aftermath, stating that the PDP “engaged in activities that were inimical to the peace, progress and cohesion of the party, which caused its catastrophic political losses.”

Orji noted that the expectations that the party would conduct an introspective review of its outing in that election and embark on an honest process of healing wounds, rallying its members to forge a common front going forward, were disappointingly not met.

IN another development, the Cross River State chapter of the PDP has inaugurated registration and revalidation committees across the three senatorial zones in the state, passing a vote of confidence on the state chairman of the party, Venatius Ikem.

The various committees made up of 59 members, are headed by Tim Ekawo for North, Lawrence Takon for Central and Ekpo Ada for South.

Inaugurating the committee at the party’s secretariat along Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar, the state chairman said that the State Working Committee approved the constitution of the committees after due consultation with stakeholders.

Ikem said that the committees are to oversee the effectiveness of the party’s registration/revalidation exercise in the various senatorial districts.
