Five persons were reportedly injured on Wednesday night during a fire outbreak at the Lagos campus of Nigerian Law School, located at Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island.

Besides one electric cable, no property was destroyed in the outbreak.

The fire reportedly linked to an electrical fault, started at about 10: p.m.

A source told The Guardian that the fire led to stampede among some of the occupants of the hostel. “The incident created tension as many of the occupants scampered for safety.

“However, the fire was put out by hostel security officials, who quickly switched off the main power supply before the arrival of state fire service.”

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service and Rescue, Margret Adeseye, who spoke through the Public Affairs Officer of the service, Amodu Shuaibu, said there was no casualty as the incident was minor.

She disclosed that preliminary investigation by the service indicated power surge as the cause of the fire outbreak.

Adeseye said: “The fire was out on arrival of the fire service. When we investigated, we found out that an underground cable went on flame probably due to electric fault or surge and the security officers at the law school were able to switch off the electrical switchboard, which de-energised the fire. We inspected and ensured that danger was completely averted before we left the scene.”

However, she couldn’t confirm report that some of the occupants were injured.

“We learnt that some people were jumping from the fifth floor, whereas, the fire came from the ground floor.”
