Firm rolls out road safety campaign

Total Energies Marketing Nigeria Plc, in collaboration with the United Nations Global Road Safety, has unveiled the ‘Helmet 4 life initiative’, aimed at enhancing road safety and addressing road accidents.

The firm, during the unveiling in Ajegunle, Lagos, stressed that all riders should take maintenance precautions by checking, lubricating, and avoiding taking risks.

Managing Director of the firm, Dr Samba Seye, who was represented by General Manager, Retail and Gas, Abdullahi Umar, said that with the support of the company’s local affiliates and the TotalEnergies Foundation programme, the initiative aimed to provide 100,000 motorcycle helmets that meet the most stringent safety standards across 40 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

He said in Nigeria, the company would distribute 4,000 helmets to the two-wheeler riders (Okada riders) as part of the Helmet 4 Life initiative throughout the country.

Samba mentioned that in Nigeria, Okada accidents rank as the second-highest cause of road accidents, hence the need for the initiative to make quality helmets available to riders, contribute to the prevention of fatalities sustained in road accidents, involving them and actively raise awareness among riders of wearing protective equipment, risk situations, vehicle maintenance and compliance with rules.

Also, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Akintunde Olalekan, urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to always go through the riders’ union leaders for proper sensitisation on road safety.
