In a bid to address the pressing global issue of waste management, Ikeja Electric (IE) has emphasised the need for a more sustainable approach. It, therefore, urged a partnership with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to prioritise eco-friendly practices in waste management.
Besides, as part of the collaboration, the electricity distribution company has donated waste bins to 18 selected primary and secondary schools within its area of coverage.
Spokesman and Head of Corporate Communications of the company, Kingsley Okotie, said that the initiativewas developed to promote sustainable waste disposal practices.
He said that a sustainable waste management approach places emphasis on key practices, including waste classification, promoting reuse, recycling, and reduction, while discouraging the use of open dumps and incineration methods.
Okotie expressed optimism that the initiative would further embed the consciousness in children as they are educated on proper use of the donated waste bins and the opportunities inherent in the entire waste-to-wealth management cycle.
However, the Managing Director (MD)/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who spoke at the handing-over ceremony, expressed profound appreciation to Ikeja Electric for the initiative, saying that disposal via the waste bins is a critical component of the waste management cycle.
He expressed the hope that other establishments within the state would adopt the initiative as part of their CRS Corporate Social Responsibility and follow the noble example demonstrated by Ikeja Electric.
