Fire razes Oduduwa University market after gas explosion

Fire triggered by gas explosion

The mini-market at Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu (OUI), Osun State, has been gutted by fire as a result of gas explosion.

According to the management of the institution, security personnel on patrol, who noticed the fire coming from one of the shops situated in the area, and immediately alerted the security department, discovered the fire incident, which occurred on Tuesday.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Gboyega Adeyemo, denied that the fire affected the hostel on campus.

Adeyemo said: “A swift move was taken as men from the Oduduwa University Fire Service arrived on the spot to put out the fire. It took the efforts of the fire fighters in conjunction with the Obafemi Awolowo University Fire Service to control the spread of the inferno. However, at the time the fire was put out, a part of the market had been affected.

“Contrary to speculations already in social media blogs and handles, the fire outbreak did not in anyway start at the hostel. In addition, there was no loss of life or injury sustained.

“The management of Oduduwa University wishes to appreciate the Obafemi Awolowo University and Oduduwa University fire services, the OUI security unit, staff and students whose participatory efforts were pivotal in containing the fire outbreak. We are most grateful to God for sustaining the lives of those who came out to make efforts in putting out the fire.

“We, however, sympathise with traders for the damages incurred. We wish to inform the public that the safety of life and property within the premises has always remained paramount to us. However, individuals within the OUI community have been advised to remain cooperative in ensuring that we achieve this goal.”
