Speaking during the commissioning of six units of elevators at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), recently, she said that it is expedient that every health worker be equipped with modern equipment.
She said no matter the knowledge, expertise and experience of medical personnel, if the environment is not suitable, “they won’t deliver optimally. So, the equipment must be state-of-the-art. That is the difference between us and developed countries,” she observed.
Orelope-Adefulire also promised the teaching hospital 10 incubators, 10 phototherapy machines, additional two elevators and two new theaters.
She further acknowledged the consultants, Professor of Surgery and former Provost, College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL), Oluwole Atoyebi, for invaluable contributions in implementation of the elevator projects.
In his speech, Acting Chief Medical Director LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, said since 1962, LUTH has embarked on training of medical and paramedical personnel in the country and abroad.
Specifically, he disclosed there has been significant increase in budgetary allocations. “From 2019 to date, our capital budgetary allocation has increased about 900 per cent. I have no doubt in my mind that if this increase be sustained, our tertiary hospitals will be of the 21st century, comparable to any hospitals in the world. In 2022, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals donated 300 solar power street lights to LUTH,” he said.
Speaking further, he disclosed that Atoyebi approached Orelope-Adefulire for help to renovate some of the ageing facilities, and after due consideration, it was decided that LUTH be given six units of elevators to complement already existing ones.
