Experts seek opportunities for children’s development

Stakeholders in the education sector have called for renewed efforts and commitment towards the development of the child.

Speaking at the Prestige Trybe Rising Stars Challenge, held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Project Director, Adebowale Olowu, urged parents and teachers to help children discover their capabilities.

Noting that every child has a solution to the myriads of problems confronting the nation, Olowu expressed regrets that many of the country’s talents don’t have platforms to showcase their exceptional gifts.

He disclosed that the event was organised to provide a platform for Nigerian children to showcase their exceptional talents.

Olowu said: “A lot of them are losing their voices as a result of peer pressure, their environment, parental influence or even school.

“The Rising Star Challenge is an inter-school competition, where children expressed themselves through music, dance, comedy, drama and special talents,” he added.

Some teachers across the state were also recognised for their commitment and attitude to work, especially in helping the students build a brighter future.

On his part, Dean, Faculty of Education, UNILAG, Prof. Adebayo Oladipo, noted that parents and schools have the responsibility to instil morals in the children

He said: “As future leaders, there is a need to inculcate in the children the fear of God. We should also let them know that team spirit and cooperation are important virtues.”

While urging the government to provide sustainable environment for vulnerable children to thrive, Oladipo said provision of quality education through proper funding and skills training programmes, are essential for their growth.

Commandant, Air Force Secondary School, Ikeja, Adamu Abdul, lamented the rot and decadence in the society, appealing to parents and teachers to tackle the menace.

One of the awardees, Ramota Gbajabiamila, who is a teacher from Lagos Baptist Senior College, Orile Agege, thanked the group for finding her worthy to be celebrated.

In the same vein, Opeoluwa Ishiekwene, also an awardee and Vice Principal, Methodist Girls High School, Yaba, appealed to parents to support teachers in the task of training the children.
