Edo announces N70,000 minimum wage

Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo State.

Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state.

Obaseki disclosed this while commissioning the new Labour House in Edo State on Monday.

The minimum wage increase is to take effect on May 1, 2024.

The governor also named the Commissions Labour House after the former governor, Adams Oshiomhole, a senator representing Edo North.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had demanded a new minimum wage for workers across states in response to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.

The removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of forex windows in 2023 resulted in food inflation and an increase in the prices of other goods and services.

The national minimum wage has been pegged at N30,000 since 2019.

The labour unions want Tinubu to announce a new minimum wage that reflects the current economic realities.

Details later.
