Former international, Felix Owolabi, has said that the performance of the Super Eagles against Pharaohs of Egypt has justified the country’s decision to sack the team’s former coach, Gernot Rohr.
Nigeria on Tuesday defeated Egypt 1-0 at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua, Cameroun.
Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Owolabi said the opener against Egypt was the best he has seen in the Eagles in a long while, adding that he is glad the team has gone back to its wings play.
“The kind of game they played against the Egyptians showed togetherness for the very first time after so many games. The typical style of the Nigerian national team was what I saw on Tuesday, which is playing from the wings.
“In the game, you could rarely identify who the midfielders or strikers were, even when you know them because every player in the team worked as a unit. The team played like a moving train and you could see the coaches busy passing instructions to the players on the field.
“The fact that our defenders were able to cage Mo Salah showed how fantastic they were. Mo Salah obviously was denied supply of ball and could not do anything. Even when he had a chance, he was sandwiched before he could cause any damage,” he said.
Owolabi, however, advised the Eagles against complacency, adding, “the players should not allow the victory in the opening game get into their heads.
“The win was a good start to our campaign at the AFCON and let’s see how the journey will end. One typical thing about Nigerians is that when you do well, they praise you, but when things turn the other way, they criticise you.”
