The Vice-Chancellor, KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, (KDU-I), Prof. Adeniyi Olatunbosun, and the Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, Folasade Aladeniyi, have stressed the need for law undergraduates to hone their skills, advocate reforms and embrace good characters as well as ethics to proffer solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
They said the myriad of problems bedevilling the country could be addressed through the right legislation, advocacy, honesty and ethical conduct by the students.
They made the call during the opening ceremony of the Law Student Association (LAWSA) week of KDU-I, which took place at the varsity’s auditorium., with the theme ‘Solving Nigeria’s Forex Crisis: The Legal Perspective’.
According to the VC, Prof. Olatunbosun, “The law profession is a noble profession and whoever wants to join it must abide by the rules and tenets of the profession. By and large, every prospective lawyer, starting from the various faculties of law must always be people of good conduct. Character is of the essence and we must maintain decorum and decency in all our doings. We have the rules of ethics for the profession.
“Law is meant to solve the challenges in our society and also even when it comes to forex, we must conform with the rules of law. Law is to regulate how we transfer business across borders. Those who also want to have anything to do with foreign exchange must conform to the rules of the banking law and negotiable instruments as well as other financial regulations governing this aspect.”
In his lecture, a former Chairman, of Young Lawyers Forum, Ibadan Chapter, Obasa, who was a guest lecturer, said lawyers trade in solutions and the law students must up-skill, uphold the rules of law, advocate reforms and be part of Nigeria’s solutions, not part of the problems.
