The Provost, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, Dr Wahab Azeez, has emphasised the need for adequate security in tertiary institutions and called for urgent government’s intervention.Â
He stated this while presenting his two-year scorecard as provost of the institution.

Azeez, who hinted that Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) was being installed in the school, added that the services of legionnaires had been engaged to beef up its internal security.

He also disclosed that meetings and deliberations had been held with the police force in addition to its privacy measures.
The provost also explained that efforts were underway to upgrade the institution to the Federal University of Technical Education while applauding the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in improving the current state of the college in the areas of infrastructure, teaching and learning.
The provost noted that the upgrade of the college to university status would serve students yearning for a degree, adding that the school is already in talks with the National Assembly.

He said there was a need to give priority attention to technical education to enable the country to fare well in terms of growth and development.

“We need to make the public know the importance of technical education. China is giving preference to technical education and that is why the country is progressing”.
“In all of these things, TETFund has been of great assistance; our programmes are increasing; so, we need to expand and create an enabling environment for youths to learn more skills,”Azeez added.
He identified some of the challenges confronting the institution as inadequate teaching infrastructure, problems of landscape, dilapidated hostel accommodation and poor power supply among others.
He however disclosed that the school has created more and improved its business ventures to address the problem of inadequate funds and increase its internally generated revenue.
Azeez added that the issue of water and power supply is being addressed, while the college is working on a proposal from a consultant to provide solar energy, that can be used to illuminate the entire school environment when there is a power failure.
