Diocese of Nnewi debunks ban of national anthem, Nigerian flag in churches

Says Bishop Was Quoted Out Of Context

The Diocese of Nnewi (Anglican Communion) has refuted the allegation being circulated on social media that the Diocese has banned the national anthem and Nigerian flag in churches.

The church frowns at the online blog published on July 8, 2021, and titled: “Nnewi Anglican Bishop Bans National Anthem And Nigerian Flag in Churches.”

Refuting the allegation, the Episcopal Assistant in Clerical Matters, Diocese of Nnewi (Anglican Communion), Venerable Dr. Nelson Iluno, said the online story was fake and that the Diocese under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Dr. Ndubuisi Obi did not ban any national symbol. Iluno, who also noted that there was no evidence to support such allegation, added that the Bishop of Nnewi was quoted out of context.

“The Diocese of Nnewi (Anglican Communion) recognises the national anthem and national pledge, Nigerian flag and coat of arm as common properties and national symbols of Nigeria. The Diocese of Nnewi frowns at citizens who handle these national symbols anyhow. The Nigerian flag and national anthem are important.

The Nigeria flag is hoisted at Bishops Court, Nnewi, and in our schools and offices. We encouraged headteachers, teachers, and students to recognise the values and beauty of these national symbols, including official portraits,” he said.
