Death toll in Plateau community attack rises to seven

The death toll from the attack on the quiet community of Kwall in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday night, June 3, 2024, has risen to seven.

Initially reported as five deaths, including a pastor and his wife, the figure has now increased.

Mr Danladi Samuel, a farmer from Kwall, recounted the incident at the Bauchi Road Motor Park in Jos.

He explained that he was returning to the community as peace and calm had returned after the tragic event.

Samuel described how he was returning from the farm with two other men when they encountered heavily armed assailants who shot the two men dead.

Samuel narrowly escaped by hiding in the bush after staying behind to urinate, avoiding detection by the bandits.

He trekked to a nearby Miango village for safety and then proceeded to Jos. The following day, while travelling to Jos, he heard passengers discussing the attack, including the deaths of a pastor, his wife, and three others.

Samuel shared his escape story and confirmed the additional deaths, bringing the total to seven.

The victims were Pastor Dauda Dalyop, 63, of Assemblies of God Church in Kwall, his wife Mrs. Chummy Dauda, 57, Mr. Chwe Ajuhs, 26, Mr. Joshua Kusa, 45, and Mrs. Rikwe Doro, 43.

The killings were confirmed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association, Sam Jugo, who reported that the assailants arrived heavily armed, killing five people and injuring others.

Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) responded to prevent further violence.

The attack occurred two days after another youth from the community was ambushed and killed. Danjuma Auta, Secretary General of the Irigwe People’s Development Association, urged the community to remain calm and law-abiding, as the OPSH had formed a 17-man peace committee to investigate the incident.
