Dangote Refinery commences supply of diesel, aviation fuel to oil marketers

Dangote oil refinery on Tuesday began supplying the Nigerian domestic market with petroleum products like diesel and aviation jet fuel.

A group executive at Dangote, Devakumar Edwin confirmed this to Reuters.

The management earlier fixed January 2024 for the refinery to commence domestic supply of petrol products.

“We have substantial quantities. Products are being evacuated both by sea and road,” Edwin said. “Ships are lining up one after another to load diesel and aviation jet fuel.

“Ships load a minimum of 26 million litres, though we try to push for 37 million litres vessels, for ease of operations.”

The Dangote Refinery, which is the largest in Africa, is an oil refinery owned by Dangote Group that was commissioned on the 22nd of May 2023.

Speaking at the commission ceremony, founder and CEO of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said the priority was to ramp up production to ensure the refinery could fully satisfy the demands of Nigerians and eliminate the tragedy of import dependency.

The refinery was built on a peninsula on the outskirts of Lagos at a cost of $20 billion and was completed after several delays.

It can refine up to 650,000 barrels per day and will be the largest in Africa and Europe when it reaches full capacity.
