The Kano/Jigawa area command of Nigeria Customs Services has arrested one suspect and intercepted foreign currencies at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State.
Men of the command intercepted the suspect, who arrived at the airport on Ethiopian Airlines from Saudi Arabia en route Addis Abba, with foreign notes conceived in baby diapers.
Addressing journalists yesterday during the official handover of the seizure to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the command’s headquarters in Kano, the area comptroller, Suleiman Umar, declared that $184,800 and 1,723,310 Saudi Riyal were intercepted from the suspect.
Umar, who explained that the Customs arrested the suspect on June 17, 2021, at the airport, stressed that the handover was to fulfil all administrative exigencies.
The Customs boss, who debunked reports on the social media that the command seized billions of naira, insisted that the service would not compromise its responsibility.
SIMILARLY, the NCS, Federal Operations Unit, Zone D, has seized diesel, insecticide, textile materials, vehicles, used tyres, rice among others worth N51,238,235 within five months.
The Comptroller, Adesanmi Omiye, at a press conference in Bauchi, yesterday, said the seizures, from February to June 2021, included a vehicle containing 33,900 litres of diesel worth N12,910,250 and packaged in 565 bags, adding that they were seized around Oturkpo, Benue State.
He added that other seizures included 24 bundles of foreign textiles with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N8.88 million, four vehicles with DPV at N5.13 million and 27 bales of used clothing with DPV at N4.86 million.
“The operatives of the FOU Zone D, Bauchi, apart from blocking and suppressing smuggling within the zone, have made seizures of 565 sacks containing 60 litres each of petroleum products totalling 33,900 litres with DPV of N12,910,250.
“Others are 143 foreign parboiled rice with a DPV of N3.776 million, 196 cartons of foreign noodle with a DPV of N1.411 million, 60 jerry cans of vegetable oil with a DPV of N1.44 million and 52 used tyres with a DPV of N624,000,” he said.
