Concern as tugboat sinks in Tin Can port

• Vessels berth, discharge 4,370 vehicles at terminal, says officer

Concerns have trailed a recent tugboat incident at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos. But the management of Five Star Logistics Terminal, yesterday, assured that the incident did not disrupt vessels berthing or other port operations.

A tugboat belonging to Medlog Nigeria Limited had, on June 7, sunk between berths 9 and 10 operated by the terminal, while piloting a barge loaded with containers.

During the incident, a vessel MSC RESILIENT III VOY ZA417A, was discharging at berth. Also, two Roll on Roll off (Roro) vessels, GLOVIS SUN VOY 240S01 and SILVERSOUL VOY 24SS06 discharged 4,370 vehicles and completed their berthing and sailing as scheduled.

Additionally, a container vessel berthed and sailed during the same timeframe, according to the management of the terminal. The terminal’s management said the situation was handled professionally and speedily, even as it commended Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for its swift and professional response in managing the situation.

The Customer Care Manager at Five Star Logistics, Mr Chuks Okereafor, further elaborated that the NPA approved a salvage plan promptly, and the tugboat was successfully removed on June 16, 2024, noting that throughout the period, operations continued without interruption.

Okereafor, in a statement, refuted reports linking the cause of the incident to the terminal. The management reassured port users of the terminal’s commitment to maintaining optimal service delivery.
