College introduces new courses, partners societies

The Lagos State Cooperative College has introduced Micro-Finance Enterprise Development; and Cooperative Economics and Management courses in the institution at the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) level, as part of its effort to enhance capacity development.

Chairman, Governing Council of the college, Mr. Oyebowale Raji, who stated this during the celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives, with the theme, “Rebuilding better together” assured that the college would partner cooperative societies to develop human resources to facilitate growth.

He said the introduction of the new courses became imperative to empower Nigerians with needed skills and educational knowledge to manage small, medium and cooperative business enterprises successfully, adding that it will provide opportunities for those seeking career advancement in cooperative enterprise.

Raji said: “Lagos Cooperative College has introduced two new courses: Micro-Finance Enterprise Development and Cooperative Economics and Management in the institution at the OND level. This is part of our effort to enhance capacity development of the movement in the state.

“The college currently offers a Professional Diploma in Cooperative Management, but from September, we will be admitting students into National Diploma courses in Cooperative Economics and Management, as well as in Microfinance and Enterprise Development.

“We at the College will not relent in our effort to partner with all our cooperative societies in jointly developing the much needed human resources to reinstate the movement to the path of growth and development of the cooperative subsector of the state and Nigeria in general.”

He explained that cooperative business activities in Lagos State, as well as in Nigeria, serve as financial hub to many small-scale businesses in the informal sector of the economy and could be better exploited for maximum benefit with the availability of more knowledgeable and skilled personnel in the field.

Raji added that the college was committed to sustenance of the highest standards in all academic programmes.

He said the commencement of the programmes would be a milestone that would afford the institution the opportunity to live up to its functions of teaching, research and community development.

Lagos Cooperative College is a specialised cooperative institution established by the Lagos State government and mandated to provide training, learning and research to cooperators and members of the public.
