Coco Voice Actor; Ana Ofelia Murguía Dies At 90

Mexican actress, and the voice behind Mama Coco Ana Ofelia Murguía, has died at the age of 90.


Murguía played a vital role in the film, acting as the grandmother in the award-winning animation, a film which follows a Mexican boy’s journey to the Land of the Dead as he uncovers family secrets on his quest to become a musician.

The movie beautifully captures the essence of Mexico’s culture and the traditions of the Day of the Dead.

The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature in Mexico expressed deep sadness over Murguía’s passing, highlighting her significant contributions to the performing arts in the country.

One of the film’s memorable moments was the heartwarming scene where Mama Coco and her great-grandson Miguel sing “Remember Me” together, adding a touching layer to the narrative.

Born in 1933, Murguía received a special lifetime achievement award in 2011 for her remarkable career spanning over 40 years in stage, film, and television.

Her impact on the Mexican cinema industry was further recognized when she won the best supporting actress award at the Ariel awards three times.

Coco, which won two Oscars in 2018 for best animated film and best original song, was celebrated for its representation of Mexican culture.

Producer Lee Unkrich expressed gratitude to Mexico, emphasizing the importance of diverse representation in children’s films.
