Chukwuma sends signals ahead of AFN Olympics trials

Okorie re-appointed Performance Director

United States-based sprinter, Rosemary Chukwuma, has shown her readiness for the fast-approaching Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trails slated for Benin City, posting a personal best (PB) time of 10.88seconds at the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries.

The 2024 AFN national trials, which will be used to select the nation’s flagbearers to the African Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, as well as the Paris Olympic Games, will hold at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City, Edo State from June 16 to 18.

At the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries held in the U.S., Chukwuma wiped 0.11s off her Personal Best time set in 2022. Chukwuma’s time of 10.88seconds is the second fastest time by a Nigerian woman in history behind Blessing Okagbare.

Meanwhile, the AFN has re-appointed US-based board member, Victor Okorie, as the federation’s performance director and Liaison Officer in countries around the world. His re-appointment was made public by AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, at the weekend.

Okorie, a silver medalist at the 2003 All African Games in Abuja, was AFN’s performance director between 2021 and 2023, but the position was rested alongside others when the AFN reconstituted its committees earlier this year.

Okowa stated that there is a need for Okorie to continue with his position as performance director and Liaison Officer of the AFN considering his achievements between 2021 and 2023.

Okorie worked with the technical team for Team Nigeria’s qualification at the 2024 World Relays in the Bahamas, where the country’s athletes picked four out of the five relay tickets to Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
