Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ushered in a new chapter of literary exploration on December 29, 2023, with the enchanting launch of her maiden children’s book, Mama’s Sleeping Scarf. The event, themed “Christmas Magic with Chimamanda,” graced by dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, who joined in via telecast, underscored the profound impact of nurturing children’s imagination through the art of storytelling.

Mama’s Sleeping Scarf weaves a captivating narrative around young Chino, who, through playful interactions with her mother’s colourful scarf, discovers the richness of her family’s culture, values, and the boundless realms of imagination. Published in the UK and US by Harper Collins in September 2023 and later in Nigeria by Narrative Landscape Press in October 2023, this marks Adichie’s inaugural foray into children’s literature and a triumphant return to book launches in Nigeria after several years.

Known for acclaimed works like Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, Adichie expressed her desire to create a book that mirrors the essence of her childhood while celebrating the unique bond between mother and child.

In a deliberate effort to revive Nigeria’s reading culture, Adichie emphasized the pivotal role of reading in critical thinking. Addressing parents, she remarked, “Your children are not reading because you don’t read.” Encouraging parents to cultivate a reading culture at home, she stressed the transformative power of even a page a day.

Former President Obasanjo underscored the importance of seeking wisdom through reading, while Prof Osinbajo applauded Adichie’s ability to captivate young minds. Notable figures like Ms. Bella Disu, Mr. Hakeem Belo-Osagie, and Ms. Munachi Mbonu shared personal insights on the transformative impact of reading and literature in general.

Mama’s Sleeping Scarf received acclaim from renowned publications such as The Washington Post, hailing it as “a children’s book that has no agenda beyond joy.” The Guardian UK praised it as “a joyful, acutely observed picture-book account of imaginative adventures,” Ebony Magazine lauded it as “a heartfelt story about family adventures.”

The book has been featured in Brittle Paper’s 100 Notable African Books of 2023, recognized by The Guardian Nigeria, and declared to captivate readers of all ages with its heartwarming message.
