BREAKING: No source of Cholera outbreak in Lagos yet – Commissioner

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has stated that the state is yet to ascertain the major cause of cholera in the state.


Speaking on the update on the disease at a press briefing on Monday, Prof. Abayomi, said that the ministry is working round the clock to checkmate the spread of cholera in all nooks and crannies of the state with 417 suspected cases, and 35 confirmed cases, with 24 deaths.

“So far, We have not been able to identify a source yet but investigations are continuing. We want to see if we can identify a particular source (s),” he said.

In a post on his Instagram handle, on Friday, Abayomi observed that “the situation report as of June 19, 2024, indicated 417 suspected cases, 35 confirmed cases, and 24 recorded deaths.

Abayomi stated that the cases were reported from the Agege, Badagry, Ikeja, Mushin, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Epe, Ikorodu, Ojo, Alimosho, and Eti-Osa areas of the state.

Others included Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Amuwo-Odofin, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Island, Shomolu, Apapa, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos Mainland, and Surulere.

Meanwhile, Director General of NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris emphasised on the need for the country to embrace the use of vaccines and other preventive measures to curb the spread of acute diarrhoea infection.

The NCDC had said that 10 states of Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos accounted for 90 per cent burden of the disease.
