At inter-house meet, Deeper Life School explains interest in sports

DLHS Education Secretary, Mrs. Thelma Malaka, presenting the trophy to the overall winner during school’s sixth biennial Inter-House Sports Competition… at the weekend.

Sports is one of the best ways to instil discipline, perseverance and hard work on students, Deeper Life High School (DLHS), Lagos Campus, has explained.

At its sixth inter-house sports competition held at its sports ground, at the weekend, the school’s administrator, Emmanuel Eze, said DLHS encourages students to engage in sports, saying there was no doubt that for good physical fitness and strength, sport is an integral part of life.

He described sports as a crucial part of a student’s growth and development, saying, “sport helps us in living a healthy life. It helps the students to keep fit, remain active, inculcate discipline, self-esteem, confidence, and teamwork.”

According to Eze, “Sport gives one opportunity to have a broader view of the world and life. These and more qualities are the reasons we encourage our students to take part in sports and not just focus on academics alone.

“In addition to these, the necessity to prepare for greater opportunities like those of the catalogues of men and women, in the likes of Chioma Ajunwa, Tobi Amusan, Austin Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo among others, who demonstrated focus and resilience to create outstanding records in sports attest to the immense benefits in sports.”

The occasion, graced by parents and well-wishers of the school, was chaired by Rear Admiral Daniel Atakpa, who was represented byFlight Commander Sallau Bappah.

The students contested for laurels in tug of war, high jump, march past, relay race, 100, 200 and 400 metres races, among others.

Also speaking at the event, Rear Admiral Atakpa noted the significance of sports in the training and development of young minds, urging schools to expose their students to sporting activities, which, he said, help in developing the total man.

“The dedication, discipline and teamwork demonstrated on the field not only contribute to physical wellbeing, but also foster essential life skills.

“As the chairman of this very important day, I commend each participant for your hard work, determination and sportsmanship. I believe that events like these are not just about winning but about the spirit of togetherness, friendship, learning and growth.”
