APC calls for state of emergency in Rivers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state, insisting that such is the only way of taming the upsurge of political crisis in the state.

Recall that Rivers State was hit with a fresh political crisis following controversies trailing the tenure of chairman in the 23 local government areas of the state.

Chairman of the APC caretaker committee in the state, Tony Okocha, made the call in Port Harcourt today, stating that the oil-rich state is already enmeshed in deep-rooted political crisis, maintaining that a state of emergency remains the way out.

Okocha said, “Rivers State is currently at war. The Local Government Law No. 2, 2024, has already outlawed the use of caretaker committee chairmen, so if by tomorrow, Thursday, June 20, 2024, the court gives its ruling in favour of the chairmen, are we going to have two chairmen in each local government?”

He criticised the appointment of the caretaker committee chairmen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara today.

The APC state boss, however, warned that if the crisis is allowed to escalate, it will affect the economy of Nigeria, considering the position of the state in the country.
