Angela Bassett Receives Honorary Oscar at Governors Awards

Veteran actress Angela Bassett added another prestigious accolade to her collection at the 14th Governors Awards, receiving an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the film industry.

Standing tall at 65, Bassett took to the stage with grace and a heartfelt speech. A significant portion was dedicated to celebrating the “trailblazing” Black actresses who paved the way for her, including icons like Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson, and Rosalind Cash.

“They were my North Star, my guiding light,” Bassett declared, her voice filled with emotion. “Proof that while the road might be bumpy, there was a way to fulfill what I believed deep in my soul was my destiny. I stood on their strong, unwavering shoulders, and I thank them for every sacrifice, doubt, rejection, and triumph that paved the path for me.”

She continued, emphasizing the crucial role these women played in shaping her dreams. “Had it not been for their resilience, their willingness to fight through fear and uncertainty, their relentless pursuit of every role, I wouldn’t have even dared to imagine what was possible.”

But Bassett’s vision extended beyond personal gain. “This honor isn’t just for me,” she stated, her voice firm and hopeful. “It signifies a crucial step towards a future where embracing each other’s diverse humanity, stories, and perspectives isn’t the exception, but the norm.”

Concluding with a powerful message of unity, Bassett added, “This must be our goal, to remember that together, we rise. When we stand united, we all win.”

Bassett’s Honorary Academy Award serves as a well-deserved recognition of her impactful career and a shining example of the progress that’s been made in inclusivity within the film industry. Her tribute to the pioneering Black actresses who led the way is a reminder of the collective effort it takes to break barriers and pave the path for future generations.
