Aisha Maikudi: 10 things to know about UniAbuja’s 41-year-old female VC

History was made on Thursday, June 27, 2024 when Professor Aisha Maikudi was announced as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja)following a decision by the Senate of the university.


Professor Maikudi took over in an acting capacity from Professor Abdulrasheed Na’allah, the institution’s sixth vice chancellor whose tenure ends on June 30.

Until her appointment, the professor of international law was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the university.

She is expected to superintend the university pending the appointment of a substantive vice chancellor by the governing council when inaugurated.


By this appointment, UniAbuja joins the league of tertiary institutions in Nigeria with female VCs including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Benin (UNIBEN), University of Calabar (UNICAL), University of Delta, Agbor, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Lagos State University (LASU), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), among others.

Here are 10 things to know about her:

1. A native of Katsina State, she was born on January 31, 1983 in Zaria Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.

2. Aged 41, Professor Maikudi is the youngest female professor of Law in Northwestern Nigeria and the University of Abuja.

3. She attended Queens College, Lagos where she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

4. She proceeded to the University of Reading, graduating with LLB in 2004 and LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005.


5. The don bagged a PhD in International Law in 2015 from the University of Abuja.

6. Maikudi joined the service of the UniAbuja on September 4, 2008 as Lecturer II and rose to the rank of professor in 2022.

7. She became the first female Deputy Dean at the university’s Faculty of Law in 2018.

8. In 2019, she became the pioneer Director, University of Abuja International Centre.

9. Maikudi has attended several national and international conferences in the United Kingdom, United States, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt, etc as well as conducted several research on United Nations Law and has written extensively in the area.

10. She is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
