AFCON: Varsity bursar dies while watching Nigeria vs S’Africa match

Nigeria later won against her South African counterpart in a match that ended in penalty kicks by four goals to two after a goal apiece.

Ayuba was reportedly rushed home from a viewing centre near his house in Sango area of Ilorin.

A source said Ayuba had finished watching the extra time when he suddenly raised an alarm, expressing discomfort. He was taken home and thereafter rushed to a private hospital.

“The deputy Bursar watched the Nigeria/South Africa match from the beginning till the end of the extra time. When it was the time for penalty kicks, he complained of dizziness.

“He sought to go back home and rest, not knowing that his blood pressure (BP) had shot up.

“On getting home, he collapsed and was rushed to a private hospital in Sango. From there, he was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH). Before he could be attended to, he died,” the source said.

The late Ayuba was buried yesterday morning, according to Islamic rites.

Director of Information, KWASU, Saedat Aliyu, confirmed that Ayuba died Wednesday night, and that the cause of his death is yet to be ascertained by the management of the university.

“He was hale and hearty and was full of life on Wednesday at his office. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljanah Firdaus,” she added.
