President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday awarded each member of the Super Eagles squad to the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast with a national title, one plot of land and a flat.
This was announced by Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, after the President hosted the team in Abuja following their arrival from Ivory Coast.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded all members of the Team Nigeria and @NGSuperEagles, the Member of the Order of Niger (MON),” Dada posted on X.
“The President has also presented the @NGSuperEagles and team Nigeria one flat in Nigeria and a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a sign of gratitude for their service.”
Tinubu had earlier expressed gratitude to the Super Eagles for coming second at the 2023 AFCON which came to an end on Sunday.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed in their bid to win the trophy which would have been their first since 2013 after losing 2-1 to the host nation, Ivory Coast.
William Troost-Ekong put the Super Eagles 1-0 up. The Elephants equalised through Franck Kessie with an assist from Simon Adingra who also set up Sebastian Haller’s winning goal.
Tinubu in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale hailed the Super Eagles, saying that the team demonstrated the great resilience and talent of the Nigerian people.
The president also saluted the Super Eagles for their tenacious performance in the final of the just-concluded continental football showpiece in Ivory Coast.
“Let this passing event not dispirit us, but bring us together to work harder. We are a great nation bound as one by the green-white-green banner of resilience, joy, hope, duty, and untiring love,” Tinubu said.
“To those cherished Nigerian youths expressing their gifts in communities, drawing lines in the sand as they play football in their humble rectangles of play, you can be our heroes tomorrow, do not relent in your pursuit. My administration is here to make dreams come true.”
