The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared a nationwide strike which began on Monday, June 3, 2024, after a meeting with the tripartite committee on national minimum wage and representatives of organised labour ended on a deadlock on Sunday night.
The strike action was decided upon after the Federal Government and the labour unions failed to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage and the reversal of the recent hike in electricity tariffs at the meeting.
With organised labour asking for a new minimum wage of N494,000 and the government proposing N60,000, both parties are far away from reaching a resolution.

With the nationwide strike taking full effect on Monday, here are some affiliated agencies that have joined organised labour in the exercise.
1. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU): ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday in a statement addressed to the branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of the association directed university lecturers across Nigeria to show solidarity with organised labour by joining the strike.
2. Aviation unions: including the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers on Sunday directed their members to take part in the nationwide strike.

3. Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN): The union directed members at all ports, jetties, terminals, and oil and gas platforms to ensure total compliance with the strike.
4. The National Union of Electricity Employees: The union requested all executives to mobilise their members for total compliance with the strike directive.

5. National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees: The Union has also directed their members to join the nationwide strike.
6. Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria: JUSUN directed all branches to ensure compliance with the strike, ensuring a total shutdown of all Courts and Judicial Institutes across Nigeria.

7. National Union of Teachers: NUT has ordered its members across the country to embark on the strike action.
