5 Simple Ways To Control Your Blood Sugar 

Blood sugar or glucose levels play a major role in our overall health. Uncontrolled sugar levels can lead to a cascade of health problems, even death.  

Blood sugar level is the process of understanding the amount of glucose in our body system, whether it is low or high.

Healthy sugar levels are less than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) after not eating (fasting) for at least 8 hours. And they’re less than 140 mg/dL 2 hours after eating.

One of the major causes of diabetes in Nigeria today is high sugar levels, this happens when it is too high and not controlled or checked. 

For this reason, it is very important to keep our blood sugar levels in check. Here are five (5) simple ways to control your sugar levels.

  1. Eat more food rich in fibre is Your Friend:

Fill your plate with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Fibre slows down sugar absorption, preventing unwanted spikes. This not only controls it, it also helps in preventing it. 

      2. Take enough water: 

Staying hydrated is essential for blood sugar management. Sip water throughout the day to keep yourself well-hydrated.

       3. Exercising:

Exercise is a powerful tool for the body generally.  Regular physical activity helps your body use sugar more efficiently. Aim for some form of exercise most days of the week.

        4. Meditation:

Chronic stress can disrupt your blood sugar levels. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature. Prioritize stress-reduction techniques for better blood sugar control. 

         5. Enough sleep: 

When you’re sleep-deprived, your body struggles to regulate blood sugar. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night.

Adequate sleep is crucial for overall health, including blood sugar management.

Meanwhile taking snacks like walnuts, and peanuts also helps reduce sugar intake.

Avoid sugary treats and choose healthy alternatives. Snack on nuts, fruits with nut butter, or veggie sticks with hummus.

These options will keep you satisfied and prevent blood sugar spikes.
