12 Niger LG schools get peace clubs

Peace-Club

Global Peace Foundation has set up peace clubs in 12 primary and secondary schools in Lapai Local Council of Niger State to enlighten youths, especially pupils, on the need to say no to division among the people.

Country Director of the Non-Governmental Organisation, Rev John Hayab, gave the hint to The Guardian after his keynote address at the Lapai Peace Festival, organised by Global Peace.

Hayab explained that the foundation had been in Lapai for about two years to “catch them young,” adding that it is challenging that many Nigerian enjoyed relative peace with different types of religion, during their young age, “but now, there is so much division” by people hiding under religion with different identities.

The cleric explained that the foundation was building a global network of grassroots leaders to develop community, national and regional peace-building models for ethical, cohesive and compassionate societies guided by the vision of one family under God.

“One family under God, there is no one that is Muslim or Christian,” he said, adding that all the religious adherents belong to one family.

He appreciated the Lapai Emirate Council and the people for support and encouragement throughout the period the foundation has been in the area.

Emir of Lapai, Umaru Bago, Tafida III, thanked the organisation for initiating peace clubs in schools, adding that it would go a long way to educate the pupils on unity and peace.

As a Muslim organisation, said Imam Ibrahim Idris of Al-Habibiya Islamic Society, Abuja, his group aligns with the thinking and initiative of the foundation and enjoined Nigerians to live peacefully with one another.

The Chairman, Peace and Reconciliation Committee in Lapai, Yusuf Isah, described intervention by Global Peace in the area as a welcome development, adding that its activities created more awareness among Lapai residents.
